The vocal cords in action

On this page you have the opportunity to watch the vocal cords in action.

This is filmed with a stroboscope. This is a common method to examine the vocal cords. The stroboscope is inserted through the mouth and the preferred method to study the vocal cords in action is by sounding an [i].

This is filmed with fiber optics. The camera is inserted through the nose and further down to the lower pharynx. Where we can then observe the laryngeal cartilage and muscle. We see how they work in a natural vibrato, a popvibrato, a growl sequence and a laugh.
